Decontamination after terrorist attacks or industrial accidents with biological and/or chemical agents („bio-chem“) must be fast and efficient, in order to reduce the number of victims and to eliminate the consequent damages. The decontamination of living biological agents (bacteria, viruses) or nonliving ones (toxins, regulators) and toxic chemicals could be accomplished by reactions of hydrolysis in various experimental conditions, in particular in alkaline medium, reactions with amines or ammonia, alcohols, phenols etc. and by their transformation into less toxic degradation products. “Bio-chem” intentional or unintentional contamination is a real risk, towards which an effective management must be available to prevent and control it. Decontamination is an essential measure to protect the personnel and the environment. Synthesis and testing of new „bio-chem“ decontaminants, based on quaternary ammonium salts, complete the arsenal of protection against chemical and biological agents. The most effective selected substances could be produced and used for decontamination in accordance with legal procedures.
Stress is a constant presence in our lives, whether we analyze it in professional, social or family terms. This daily reality creates a state of tension, strain and discomfort, causing significant changes in physical and mental health. Stress at work can affect anyone, at any level, in any sector and in organizations of any size. Stress affects health and safety of individuals and also organizations’ welfare and national economies. There is a definite correlation between the level of stress at work and the changes in organization’s productivity.
Introduction: Cisplatin is a well known platinum-based chemotherapeutic agent used for the treatment of diverse malignant tumours. A frequent side effect of cisplatin therapy is ototoxicity. Material and methods: Experimental, clinical studies and reviews from the English language medical literature concerning ototoxicity were selected either from PubMed or printed medical journals, pointing out cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. Molecular mechanisms, clinical audiological and histological marks of cisplatin-induced ototoxicity as well as current experimental and clinical strategies for prevention or treatment of hearing loss were reviewed. Results and discussion: A wide range of otoprotective molecules and efficient strategies against cisplatin-induced hearing loss proved to be helpful in experimental studies whereas only dexamethasone settled a slight otoprotective effect in a clinical study. Conclusion: There is no currently available treatment for cisplatin associated hearing loss and further research is required for future therapeutic options.
The article presents the main aspects of sectional anatomy, lymph nodes and adjacent structures as well as MRI examination standard protocol for prostate cancer diagnosis. Using MRI multiparametric examination we succeed in classifying efficiently the malignant prostatic tumors using PI- RADS system. Also, using MRI multiparametric examination we can evaluate the effectiveness of prostate cancer treatment.
As the medical sciences advances, so does the volume of information which becomes more and more consistent. The health care system is one of the most complex systems encountered in our society. Today, knowledge management practices have been adopted in many Romanian business sectors. However, Romanian health care system is slowly adopting such principles and concepts. This fact is created mainly because of the organizational culture. In the sanitary industry, this barrier is composed both from an organizational perspective and also, from an individual perspective. Through the knowledge management practices, doctors could benefit from the amount of data spread in different geographical regions.
The burden of colorectal cancer (CRC) is increasing all over the world. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is increasing. It is estimated that diabetes affects 387 million people worldwide. It is predicted that 552 million people worldwide will develop diabetes by 2030. A large pool of data indicate that DM increases by 2 fold the risk of CRC. This is the reason to firmly suggest the inclusion of DM in the criteria for CRC screening as an important measure to decrease the mortality of this ailment.
A significant percentage (43%) of medical errors is caused by errors in communication between healthcare professionals or between them and the patient. Today the surgeon has a multiple role (leader of the surgical team, member of the medical team, scientific role, management role).
Matching drugs with anxiolytic properties- but without the potential of inducing dependence or abuse- with clinical manifestations of various affective disorders is a very important challenge for psychiatrists. Although the first line of pharmacologic treatment for anxiety disorders remains antidepressants with serotoninergic properties, calcium channel alpha-2-delta ligands are adjuvant agents which could be useful for augmenting antidepressant agents’ clinical effects. Unfortunately, calcium channel alpha-2-delta ligands efficacy and tolerability are not very well known, due to a lack of large scale, randomized, placebo-controlled trials focused on psychiatric disorders. Data regarding pregabalin and gabapentin pharmacology and clinical effects are reviewed and conclusions with pragmatically impact based on the discovered evidence are formulated accordingly.
