Artificial Intelligence in Military Medicine: Clinical, Operational, and Educational Applications

(1) Introduction: Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming healthcare and has particular relevance in military medicine, where austere environments, uncertainty, and time-critical decisions are common; (2) Methods: A literature review was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Web of Science, covering studies published between 2000 and 2026. Relevant articles on AI in military medicine were identified and grouped into three domains: clinical, operational, and educational; (3) Results: Forty-one studies were included. In the clinical domain, AI supports decision-making, trauma care, medical imaging, and mental health, including early detection of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Operational applications include physiological monitoring, triage optimization, and medical evacuation. In education, AI enhances medical simulation and adaptive learning. Key limitations include poor data quality and availability, algorithmic bias, and limited validation in real operational settings; (4) Conclusions: AI can substantially improve military medical practice by increasing diagnostic accuracy, supporting rapid decisions, and improving operational efficiency. However, implementation requires rigorous clinical validation, transparent and reliable systems, and careful attention to ethical and organizational issues. AI should be used as a complementary tool that supports, rather than replaces, clinical judgment.

Assessment of patient satisfaction with primary health care in a military setting: A cross-sectional study from Turkey Alper Tunga Kokcu

Background and Aim: Information on patients' experiences with and evaluations of health care is considered an essential outcome indicator to assess the quality of health care. This study aims to evaluate patient satisfaction with primary health care in a military setting. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the primary health care center located in a military setting, in Ankara, Turkey. A total of 3080 military personnel who received primary care in the last 12 months formed the population of the study. Turkish version of the European task force on patient evaluations of general practice care (EUROPEP) questionnaire was administered to the participants. Results: In the study, 2677 participants were reached with a response rate of 86.9%. The mean satisfaction rate (MSR) of clinical behaviour (69.3%) was higher than the MSR of the organization of care (58.4%). The MSR of the overall questionnaire was 67.1%. Significant differences were observed in the mean satisfaction scores of patients according to their descriptive characteristics including gender, age level, troop type, and the doctor providing the care. Conclusions: This study highlights the low patient satisfaction levels, which may have resulted from the fact that the study population was young and relatively healthy, and that there was no possibility of choosing the general practitioner. The EUROPEP questionnaire, which is an internationally validated and standardized instrument, can also be used to improve primary health care in military settings.

Correlational Analysis of Performance Outcomes during the Education of Combat Medics at the Tactical Medical Training Cell of the Belgian Defense

Combat medics must deploy multiple cognitive, manual, and social skills to perform efficient life-saving interventions and ensure the safe transportation of casualties. In 2021, the Tactical Medical Training Cell of the Belgian Army introduced an immersive and integrative educational program for Advanced Emergency Medicine Technicians (EMTa) certification. This study aims to provide a correlational analysis of performance outcomes during the certification period. While conducting their assessment, candidates were evaluated in three different but complementary roles: Medical Leader (ML), Medical Practitioner (MP), and Tactical Leader (TL). The individual outcomes in theoretical and practical examinations of one hundred thirty-seven candidates were collected during 2021 and 2022. The mean success scores for the theoretical and total practical examinations were 90.6% and 80.1%, respectively. Candidates scored significantly better as TL. Theoretical results were significantly correlated with the ML function, and performances in all three positions were correlated with each other. This study showed that within the combat medic team, individual performances, even if initially well-defined, were associated with the success rates of the other positions. This finding should be considered in the further consolidation of combat medic education.
