Primary thyroid lymphoma – case report

Introduction. Even though, primary thyroid lymphoma (PTL) is a rare thyroid malignancy and extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma, this type of disease should not be disgraced in order to achieve an early diagnosis and multimodal treatment. Materials and method. We selected for discussions a primary thyroid lymphoma patient with absent constitutional (B-type) symptoms, who undergoes a multidisciplinary approach of the disease, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In this clinical case report a 84 yo male patient with stage IE diffuse large B-cell histological type (Ann Arbor staging) was treated using R-CHOP chemotherapy, followed by involved field radiotherapy, with an excellent treatment response and disease control. Results and Discussion. Usually this type of extranodal non-Hodgkin lymphoma is present in the seventh decade of life, with males being affected earlier than females. One of the most common presentations of thyroid lymphoma is an enlarging neck mass and a history of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, which is the major risk factor. The most common PTL subtypes are diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (the most aggressive histological subtype, representing 70% of all PTLs) and MALT lymphoma (30% of the PTLs). Advances in both diagnosis and treatment in the last years have improved the early diagnosis and shortened the time for treatment implementation.

The nuclear accident at Chernobyl: Immediate and further consequences

The accident at Chernobyl occurred in April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Soviet Union. The incident occurred during a scheduled safety test. A combination of inherent reactor design flaws and operators’ mistakes resulted in reactor’s No.4 disaster and the emission of a large quantity of radiation. The immediate actions involved the fire extinguishing, the cleanup of radioactive residues and the prevention of a new explosion. For this purpose, plenty of people worked with self-sacrifice. The people who lived nearby were removed. As far as the socio-economic impact for the Soviet Union is concerned, it was quite serious. Moreover, the environmental and human health consequences were also alarming with thyroid cancer being the most studied. Useful conclusions, especially for the safety both of reactors and nuclear power, as well as for the impact of radiation at ecosystems have been drawn. The debate about the use of nuclear power has remained open ever since.

Collision Tumors of the Thyroid

Collision tumors, rare neoplasms underlying two distinct histological types of carcinomas (with different origins) separated by normal tissue, are described in many organs including the thyroid gland, but to a lesser extent. We aim to overview the current published data concerning collision tumors of the thyroid (CTT). This is a narrative review considering papers published on PubMed through a search starting from the terms “collision” and “thyroid”. Inclusion criteria are full-length articles, the English language, the timeline from inception to December 2022, and original studies with different levels of statistical evidence. We followed the main types of thyroid carcinomas: differentiated thyroid carcinoma of papillary and follicular type, anaplastic/ undifferentiated/poorly differentiated carcinoma, respectively medullary thyroid carcinoma.
